Brochure

This brochure is a very boring informational trifold. It has only one picture that is not interesting and a logo of some sorts. Also there is way too much white space. The amount of text is overwhelming and is not broken up by pictures. I would recommend taking out much of the text to make it user friendly and add more pictures to make it more appealing. The design is very poor and is not visually stimulating in any way.

Tommy Hilfiger Print Ad

This Tommy Hilfiger is an example of a lifestyle advertisement. It shows young people, probably college students, “studying” by the pool while looking trendy. The target audience is either college or high school students that would fall under the category of household consumers. This advertisement is deceptive by no means because this is what most students do when they get together to study. I would add a line, body copy, and tagline because there is absolutely no print to tell the consumer what is being advertised. One would assume that it would be clothes but the brand is not clear.

Layout

This is an example of a good layout. It has a clear purpose and audience. The design is also very simplistic and clear to not take away from the picture. The picture is also imbalanced to attract more attention but it does not upset the eye.

This is an example of a bad design layout. There is no clear focus which causes the eye to jump around. There is no flow to the layout. There are too many text boxes as well. Overall it is not aesthetically pleasing to the reader.

13 A: Photoshop and Illustrator

  • The first thing that was stressed during the webinar was to develop a solid creative process even before you touch the computer. Drawing is a great way to work through your ideas before you put anything on the computer. This will make your design better.
  • The next thing to do is to make documents of the same size in both Illustrator and Photoshop.
  • Also, using smart objects by copying an item from Illustrator and bringing it in as a smart object makes working with those items much easier. Smart objects are imbeded into Illustrator as a vector file.
  • Another thing that is useful with a smart object in photoshop is that you can double click it to link it and edit it in Illustrator. The sources file, however, will not match it.
  • Lastly, you can create a new action by recording everything you do and then you can reuse that action multiple times.

Chanel Logo

The Chanel logo incorporates both their symbol and text. They also use just the symbol as their logo. It is recognizable by any fashionable person. Simplistic and black, it embodies everything Coco Chanel’s design aesthetic was about.

Drop Cap/Hanging Indent

Drop cap, in desktop publishing, is when the first letter of the first word of a paragraph is larger than all other letters to "drop" down two or more lines. Drop cap is often seen at the beginning of novel when the top of the first letter of the first word lines up with the top of the first sentence and drops down to the four or fifth sentence.

Hanging indent in word processing is when all other lines but the first are indented. Hanging indent is also known as a hanging paragraph.

Ilustrator

Adobe Illustrator is a vector graphics editor. It has some similarities to Photoshop but in my opinion is easier to become familiar with. It is mainly used for graphic logos and typesetting.

Clipping Mask

Because I was confused on the clipping mask, I went and found a tutorial that shows how to do it. It is very helpful and explanatory. She doesn't go too fast and she also tells the shortcut for the clipping mask. The clipping mask is a very interesting mask tool that adds to simple text. Click here to watch the video or simply watch it above.

Magic Wand and Quick Selection Tool Tutorial

This tutorial is a great video for beginners just starting out in Photoshop. It goes a little more in depth about the Magic Wand tool and Quick Selection tool and shows you how you can really utilize them to their full capacity. While the audio does skip a little, it really helped me understand each tool a little better. Click on the video above or go to this page to watch it.

Composition

The wood planks with an off center dandilion is a good example of Rule of Thirds. If this picture was folded three times both vertically and horizontally the dandilion would be on a point. The horizontal lines also intersect with the four points as well. This image is a JPEG, therefore it is lossy.

This is a good example of leading lines. The lines between the flowers lead your eye directly to the subject of the photograph, which in this case is a windmill. This is a JPEG image meaning it is lossy.

This photo is a good example of framing. It also has centered an arch that frames the subject of the image. It is also a JPEG image that results in a lossy file format.

This layout represents continuance very well. It successfully pulls the viewers eye backwards. It also fills in the negative space in the bottom half of the pages balancing out the picture.

The attempted new Gap logo was a failure. The word was placed in the center therefore, making it symmetrical. The gradient box that is placed on the "p" asymmetrically does not do anything for the logo though. It pulls the viewers eye to the "p", which has no significance. This is a very poor example of balance.
